Oral History Project
What is the Oral History Project?
An important part of the Historical Committee’s commitment to Preserve the Past includes our Oral History Project (OHP).
To date, we have recorded over 50 individual and group interviews. Our goal is to interview as many of our members as possible, from the beginning of WMA to the present.
The focus of the OHP is to document members’ military careers so that researchers, educators and the public will have the true story of women in military aviation. The process is easy and enjoyable – some even say it is therapeutic!
Thanks to funding from the WMA budget, we subscribe to an online platform called TheirStory which allows us to record and transcribe interview sessions. We usually begin the session by asking about your upbringing and influences on your desire to enter the military and pursue a flying career. The rest of the interview primarily covers your military career but you are welcome to share stories, personal notes and other information such challenging situations, leadership influences, family concerns, etc.
There is no set time limit but the session generally lasts about one hour. An advantage of using TheirStory is an almost-immediate transcription of the session. After we have a chance to edit (there is always some fine-tuning to do), we will send a link to the transcription and video for you to review.
