On June 30, 2010, Dawn Letson retired after twenty years working as the Coordinator of Special Collections in the Woman’s Collection at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Denton, Texas.  The Woman’s Collection was started in 1932 collecting biographies of great women at the request of then university president Dr. Louis H. Hubbard for “role models” for the students.  In relation to women in aviation, the collection is the official depository for the Women AirForce Service Pilots (WASP), the Women Military Aviators (WMA), the Whirly-Girls, Ninety-Nines, the Mercury 13 (women aviators in 1961 who passed astronaut tests and qualifications but were never selected), the British Air Transport Auxiliary (World War II female ferry pilots) and the Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Dawn attended TWU beginning in 1968.  Later transferring to Brigham Young University (BYU) and graduating in 1973, Dawn became a teacher and worked in Idaho, Georgia and New Mexico.  In 1978, she returned to BYU to earn a graduate degree in Library Science.  Working part time in the Special Collections library there she “fell in love with archival work.”

Have you been to this website?  The VA opened it this past July, and it appears to represent a decent clearinghouse of historical news, upcoming events, and health information.  By appearances, it's questionable how often the site is updated, but it's worth a look.  Stop by www1.va.gov/womenvet/ and check it out!

New Viriginia Historical Markers to Rise PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 12 July 2010 09:47

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The achievements of women are a big part of new historical markers approved for roads and highways across Virginia.

Four of 10 new markers honor the contributions of individual women and organizations founded by women who helped shape U.S. and Virginia history. The new markers recognize women involved in early voting rights efforts, as well as the nation's first women pilots and a leader in the civil rights movement.

The Virginia highway marker program began in 1927 with the installation of the first historical markers along U.S. Route 1 and is believed to be the oldest such program in the nation. More than 2,100 official markers dot the state.
