SATTAHIP, Thailand (May 14, 2010) More than 300 U.S. and Thai Sailors and Marines, along with U.S. Coast Guardsmen, kicked off Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Thailand 2010 at an opening ceremony in Sattahip, May 14. The ceremony featured a series of performances by Royal Thai Navy (RTN) bands and a silent drill team, followed by remarks from RTN Assistant Commander-in-Chief Adm. Thana Boonnark and Rear Adm. Nora Tyson, commander, Task Force 73. Tyson said this year’s bilateral U.S.-Thai exercises will feature some new aspects. “This year, we’ll also include new areas of training, like riverine and anti-submarine warfare, and unmanned aerial vehicle operations,” Tyson said. “The addition of these new specialties is proof that CARAT is adaptable and flexible and can meet emerging threats.” |

Air-Tran Airways generously offered all WASP plus 2 escorts in Business class gratis transportation to D.C. for the March 10, 2010 ceremony awarding them the Congressional Gold Medal. My trip started at Palm Beach Airport, Florida County with a change of planes in Atlanta. Since we had an approximate 3-hour layover, they requested if a company TV crew could film some of the trip. To my surprise, ABC, CBS, CNN and Fox News joined them. The pilots who were flying the plane to D.C. were an all women crew – Amanda Burford, Holly Hutchinson, Lydia Hegler. All were extremely qualified pilots with many years of experience. We went to a temporarily not in use Boeing 717 for my flying lesson – and I learned a lot. First we did the external preflight inspection, which usually takes about 10 minutes. |
